Are you a “bluebeard”? What is a bluebeard you may ask. Bluebeards are guys with thick coarse hair in their beards. If you have a bluebeard then you may need a better than average setup to take care of shaving it everyday. You need Dreadnought!
The nice folks over at Dreadnaught sent over a few things from their shaving line up for me to test out. I tried their pre-shave oil, shave cream, and aftershave balm. Before I tell what I think, let me give you a little background on Dreadnought.
Dreadnought used to be known as Bluebeards Revenge in the United Kingdom, but due to a trademark issue they introduced themselves in the United States as Dreadnought. I think the new name is awesome. It means one who fears nothing.
One of the things that sets Dreadnought apart from other shaving products is that they include Decelerine as an ingredient. It is designed to reduce the hair density of the beard over a period of several months with regular use. If you are a gent who gets a 5 O’Clock shadow at noon, then this would be ideal for you!
On to what I think about it. I have a full beard and it grows at an average rate. I have to shave everyday to keep a clean appearance. For me, Dreadnought was up to the task of getting through my whiskers!
Dreadnought recommends using their 3 step process of pre-shave oil, shave cream, and post-shave balm. I used this setup to try out the products and here are my thoughts on it.
I don’t have super sensitive skin and have never found much added benefit from using a pre-shave oil. Because my complexion is more oily I try not to add any oils to my skin. When I used it, I found that it did provide an extra layer of “slick” for my razor to glide over. In that regard, it works as it is supposed to.
I decided to not continue to use the pre-shave oil because it was too moisturizing for my skin. I know there are gents who would benefit from it. So, I had a close friend of mine, who has a few really sensitive spots under his jaw line, try it out and give me his thoughts. He found that it helped ease the razor burn and irritation in the tough spots. So again it lives up to the claims.
Dreadnought says that each jar of cream will last 50 shaves. I think it will last a little longer than that. It did not require much product at all to create a very nice lather. It goes on thick and creamy and provides plenty of cushion for the razor. To me, it has a modern scent that is light and fresh. I found that it has a great performance and left my skin feeling clean, very soft and smooth.
It also comes in a nice jar with the Dreadnought spartan logo embossed on the lid. It just plain looks cool!
The post-shave balm has a great fresh clean smell. It went on and rubbed in easily and dried quickly, leaving a smooth finish on the skin. It was quick to soothe any irritated spots from the razor. It did moisturize the skin but did not over do it. This is a great alternative to traditional aftershaves and splashes.
Does it work? Yes. Dreadnought has made a great product line here. It provides a smooth shave and leaves a soft finish to the skin. If you are a guy with a viking beard, then this is for you. That being said, even gents who have much lighter beards can still benefit from Dreadnought’s technology.
